HAMMER AND NAILS: The Perfect Book for Daddies and Daughters

What a wonderful pleasure!

Josh Bledsoe, an elementary school teacher (Love that!) and the author of Hammer and Nails, invited Angel and I do to a book review of his new publication!  It was so great because I got to do the whole thing with my 4 year old daughter!  What a fun review to do with her!

Hammer and Nails is a children's book focused on the precious relationship between a daddy and his daughter, a relationship that can really only be matched by the relationship between a mommy and her son. (Hint, hint, Josh!  I think I hear another book in your future!)

The story began with Darcy-- the little girl maybe age 4 or 5-- all slumped in her bed, bummed about a canceled playdate.  Daddy swoops in, just as a superhero should, and rescues Darcy from her playdate blues!  He suggests they take turns pulling from each of their to do lists and working together until everything is completed.  As you can imagine, Darcy's list is a tad more girly than Daddy's.  But Daddy is sure to make his masculine chores much for fun for his little princess!  Hence the title, Hammer and Nails.  What a great play on words!

The overall message is crystal clear and super important, especially in these days full of so many distractions-- Spend time with your little kiddles!  Nothing matters more to them.  Not video games.  Not ice cream.  Not television.  Everyone has a little "Darcy" or knows of one who loves one-on-one attention!

I interviewed my own tiny princess after we read the book twice and this is what she said...

What were your two favorite parts?  "When they were scared of the things they were scared of.  The daddy was scared of painting the nails.  And the little girl was scared of hammering.  And when they were fighting with the socks and they were talking about their lists, and um, they had a fun party with the lists."

Who was your favorite person?  Daddy or Darcy?  "Bof."  (That's a fancy way of saying "both" in case you were unsure.  :)  )

Did you like that story?  "Uh huh. Do it again! Dat was super cool.  Ready?"

Why do you think the title is Hammer and Nails?  "Because they bof were not sure what to do with them."

The illustrations were soooo cute!  Jessica Warrick is a talented cartoonist!  I really love the wonderful expressions she created.  You could absolutely tell the emotion behind each activity!

I'd give this story a 5 out of 5!  It truly was adorable and a PERFECT Father's Day gift!  There is nothing like the love between a daddy and his daughter and Josh Bledsoe's book, Hammer and Nails, really celebrates that love! Well done, sir!  WELL DONE!!!
